Review: ‘Grey Street’

REVIEW by: www.loudersound.com/ SOULS OF AMBIENCE – GREY STREET
Souls Of Ambience are the brainchild of Australian prog rock keyboardist Greg Sneddon, who released his debut album Mind Stroll through Mushroom Records in 1974, and woud later work with both Skyhooks and members of Men At Work. With Souls Of Ambience, he’s teamed up with British bassist Kevin Kershaw (formerly of Valhalla), guitarist Mareky Taborsky and drummer Chris George and they will release their debut concept album, A 1000 Tears, through WormHoleDeath Records on October 4.
“A 1000 Tears intricately weaves the downward spiral story of a young woman who, driven by the need to shield her sibling from their abusive stepfather, finds herself on a harrowing path,” Sneddon reveals. “From dressing in black to confront him to escaping to Grey Street, St Kilda, her narrative unfolds amidst the stark realities of street life. The album delves into themes of loss, resilience, and spiritual transcendence, offering a poignant reflection on the profound impacts of trauma and the quest for healing and redemption.”

Album Reviews…..

By Dave “That Metal Guy” Campbell October 11, 2024
“This album was excellent. The band showed strong songwriting skills and musicianship within a concept album’s confines, and enough of their personality to shine through. This would appeal to any Progressive Rock fan or just anyone who appreciates substance in their music.
From their record label’s website, “A Symphony of Darkness and Light. A cross between Gothic, Progressive, Acid, and Psychedelic Rock with a bit of blues thrown in, stemming from a classical English background. A Story of Loss, Resilience, and Hope. The concept album “A 1000 Tears” intricately weaves the downward spiral story of a young woman who, driven by the need to shield her sibling from their abusive stepfather, finds herself on a harrowing path. From dressing in black to confront him to escaping to Grey Street, St Kilda, her narrative unfolds amidst the stark realities of street life. The album delves into themes of loss, resilience, and spiritual transcendence, offering a poignant reflection on the profound impacts of trauma and the quest for healing and redemption.”
The album has eight songs, and “A Thousand Tears” is first. It has a nice, jovial beat out of the gates, with pensive vocals, and lots of minor chords, lending a somber feeling to the music. However, it crosses over to the light in the chorus. It has an artsy Progressive Rock sound for the most part. “Never Drops” is a sweeter song with more positive vibes, and many of them come pouring out in the chorus. It’s catchy, and impactful. It takes a couple of songs for me to get use to the vocalist…he has a unique sound. It’s gentle and smooth, as well as a bit quirky. “Summer Rain” brings back memories of my youth for me. It’s a fast jaunt, with a hasty, and catchy feeling, and I find myself rooting for her. “She comes down hard, like summer rain,” he quips.
“Clarice” is about a girl, of course. The way they remember her is mostly fond, but there are also some notes of regret in the song….what could have been, perhaps? Much of the song is hidden in the mist of morning but it does give you glimpses of sunbeams, and the blues tinged leads are very well done here. “Fear Time” is close to eight minutes, with darker verses and a brighter chorus. Piano is also used pretty liberally here, and the balance in the instrumentation is excellent. “Grey Street” involves looking back on a better time in your life and remembering the details vividly. Grey street is where you are now. It’s sentimental, and has PINK FLOYD vibes for me, especially in the bluesy nature of the music.
“Mary of the Mourning” might be the place where sun finally shines in her world, after the long periods of darkness, and she carries the scars with pride. The positive tones in this song make it resonate with strength. “The Devil at 4pm” closes the album, and I am immediately struck with how this song fits into the story. It’s fast rocking song that drips with blues accents and some great piano and keyboard work. Overall, this album was excellent. The band showed strong songwriting skills and musicianship within a concept album’s confines, and enough of their personality to shine through. This would appeal to any Progressive Rock fan or just anyone who appreciates substance in their music.”

By Nicky Baldrain, ‘The Music Is Out There’ section
Hailing from Australia, we find progressive rock / crossover progers SOULS OF AMBIENCE. The quartet have an excellent new eight track album out now called ‘A 1000 Tears’ which clocks in at around forty-two minutes long and is the band’s debut release.
The album opens up with ‘A Thousand Tears’, and right away you notice that singer Greg Sneddon vocally has a similar texture to that of Fish and Steven Wilson. This is catchy song, quite melodic and synth based with fabulous guitar work from Mark Taborsky. he song as it grows flows with storytelling like lyrics. It is quite poppy and melodic, superb opening song with a vintage feel. ‘Never Drops’ with atmospheric
cinematic synths, the sound vibrates through the speakers, I could see out the window some of my neighbours out and about seeing if a storm had hit, time to put the headphones on. This is a fantastic dynamic track, crisp with complex melodic guitar work, coupled with fabulous flowing easy vocals, it’s one of those songs that you will find yourself getting lost in. Next up is the synth layered groves of ‘Summer Rain’, its faster paced and catchy with lots of energy, coupled with fabulous musicianship, there is a little early Rush vibe coming through.
The smooth and beautiful ‘Clarice Daughter Beyond The Sky’, is one of my favourite song. The vocals are fantastic, very smooth and slick, this is superbly melodic with lovely melodies, the piano work is sensational and again one of those song with a story-telling style, the guitar work is clear cut and the wholevibe of this song is quite majestic.
‘Fear Time’ is another brilliant song with storytelling context, it’s quite dynamic and atmospheric, yet catchy. I love the way the song builds; it’s got a velvety quality to it with amazing vocals from Greg. It is also the longest song on the album at over seven minutes long and is beautifully performed by the whole cast, the guitar work is really impressive and anthemic. On ‘Gray Street’ Greg’s beautiful subtle vocals sounds smooth and sensational, almost hitting James Blunt/Steve Hogarth/Phil Collins quality. This is a piano led story telling track that’s balladic in style, with classic rock sounding synths, lots of atmosphere here, another highlight. ‘Mary Of The Morning’ flows in-between classic progressive rock and AOR. It’s got a dreamy chorus that pulls you in coupled with crisp melodic guitars. There is a vintage sound to the song that quite organic thanks to the synths and Greg’s vocals.
The album ends with the excellent and very catchy pop rock prog of ‘The Devil At 4pm’ which flows with a Mark Knopfler vibe. It’s a good solid song and I loved the opening with the sound of coyote’s howling adding to the atmosphere.

By Andreas 15 Oct 24: “…The opener and title song “A Thousand Tears” shines with an expansive arrangement. Elegant sound structures and the dreamy, bright vocals, which at times are a little reminiscent of Feargel Sharkey, ensure an atmospheric start. The track mixes personal self-reflection with powerful themes such as justice and transformation.
“Never drops” begins gloomily and slowly, before the narrative vocals and the breadth of the guitar add a folky touch that creeps comfortably into the ear canals. This is followed by the lively “Summer rain”, with its experimentally seductive keys, which is lively and accelerated and ends surprisingly – and I don’t mean the background thunderstorm. This up-tempo piece has a latent trace of despair within it, which is hinted at in the vocals. “Fear Time” has the typical characteristics of psychedelic, progressive rock. Experimental and also at times confusing. “Grey street” is a beguiling ballad that reveals its gentle mourning. The final song, “The Devil At 4pm”, is much more intense and is weird and even a little bit like a western.
Conclusion: The Australians have managed to create a successful debut album on the altar of prog rock. Their playful soundscapes create a variety of atmospheres, ranging from romantic and playful to disturbingly experimental and classic rock. Fans of 70s prog rock and those with a preference for bands like Uriah Heep, Deep Purple or Jethro Tull will probably find a home here. Since the various songs are spiced up with a pinch of British folk from the 90s, fans of the Oyster Band could also get something out of this. …”

Review: October 12, 2024 “Australian keyboard wizard Greg Sneddon has been enchanting the rock world since the 70s, but this Souls Of Ambience project is his latest adventure that takes on an international dimension with the use of musicians from other places. As for A 1000 Tears, it is presented as the debut album of this new entity. What we hear here is progressive-inspired rock , capable of developing atmospheric environments and always with enormous strength coming from the organic work of the production. Of course, the analogue keyboards are the highlight, but we should not forget the work of a rough guitar that manages, at certain stages, to loosen up and venture into metal riffs . In addition to the keyboards, Sneddon also sings. Or to be more precise, he tells stories, narrates, declaims, in a calm and serious tone and with an unconventional phrasing, often with the verses being released discontinuously and in counter-tempo. And, in this unique way of approaching the vocal component, we are reminded of Mark Knopfler or even Leonard Cohen . From this combination, we dare say that the sound of Souls Of Ambience results from a strange cross between Yes , Dire Straits and the Canadian poet, writer and singer, always with sharp and acid guitars. Musically, A 1000 Tears is also an album where versatility is present. Firstly, with the aforementioned approaches to prog rock , ambient and even metal , but also due to its cinematic, theatrical component and some details of world music . The musicality is also very evident, often associated with certain forms of development that the band seems to work very well with. Therefore, what Souls Of Ambience shows us is a mature and bold sound exploration. And Greg Sneddon , with his team, creates a musical narrative that defies stylistic boundaries and stimulates the listener’s imagination with the delicacy of a storyteller, building soundscapes where time is suspended and emotions flow.”

Many thanks to Natasa Pribac at Wormholedeath Wormholedeath Label Japan for bringing Australian band Souls Of Ambience to our attention. They are Greg Sneddon: Keys, Lead vox, Marek Taborsky: Guitars, BG vox, Kevin Kershaw: Bass, BG vox, Chris George: Drums, Percussion and they are a proper prog rock band.
Their latest album is A 1000 Tears and is a massive piece of work. Running at just over 41 minutes and having 8 tracks it is a stunning set. The opening/title track A Thousand Tears tees the whole set up beautifully, fluid vocals backed by pounding drums and swirling keyboards, it is the second longest track on the album running at 6 mins 37 secs, anthemic is an understatement.
Never Drops sounds like a early Genesis inspired track, soaring vocals, lush production it is fabulous.
Summer Rain changes both the style and the pace of the set, it rocks along, half way through guitar riffs abound before setting it back on its course again until a minute and a half from the end when it slows right down and settles for an exit full of pomp, fabulous!!
Clarice Daughter Beyond The Sky follows, dreamy and flowing the production is superb,Halfway through the set and Fear Time which is the longest track running at 7 mins and 58 secs creeps in gently and then a minute in haunting vocals describe what Fear Time is all about perfectly. Reminiscent of Alice Cooper at his very best with I Love The Dead, Fear Time really hits the spot.
Grey Street tip toes in with a piano and acoustic guitar intro very folk rock stylie, lead guitar soon carves a path into the body of the song and it is about a real street in a suburb called St Kilda in Melbourne.
Mary Of The Morning lifts the pace once more and is the tale of another Melbourne street, delivered with more force and volume it is standout.
The final track The Devil At 4PM is a raucous bluesy number and a perfect end to the set
showing the full range of the bands abilities.
If this album had been released mid 1970’s it would easily have sat alongside Barclay James Harvest, Rick Wakeman, Early Genesis and many more.
This is a winner a breath of fresh air from another great Australian band.

Review Written by: Bernd Kröninger Band Souls of Ambience Album : A 1000 Tears Genre : Progressive Rock Record label : Wormholedeath Records
“This time, another debut album comes from the land of Ayers Rock: Australia. The four are actually not unknown musicians. They have already gained experience in several bands. Greg Sneddon (kb,voc), Kevin Kershaw (b,voc), Marek Taborsky (g,voc) and Chris Geoge (dr) are not jumping in at the deep end.
The title track “A 1000 Tears” is very melancholic and makes you think. “Never Drops” starts off Buddhistically with the sound of bells ringing. This very ponderous rhythm is enough to make you slip into a trance. We then head into “Summer Rain” euphorically . It’s a fast-paced affair. Upbeat and with a catchy chorus, the song puts you in a good mood.
“Clarice” and “Grey Street” are the ballads I expected, with a weeping guitar. Because a ballad can’t be missing from an album like this. If you listen carefully, you’ll think you’re hearing Cat Stevens . The chorus in the background forms the bridge to a solo that’s worth listening to.
“Fear Time” has the typical characteristics of psychedelic, progressive rock. Experimental and also at times confusing. And finally a solo that’s convincing.
At the end it gets faster and riffier with “ The Devil at 4pm” . Living up to the title with a devilishly good solo.
Conclusion: Well, you don’t always have to fight with “hard bandages”. The four guys from Oceania are committed to progressive rock and are very much influenced by “Jethro Tull” and “Yes” . With their calm rhythms and this extremely cool voice, they make themselves heard in the work, which also has a symphonic keyboard feel. I think it’s a successful debut, which deserves 8 out of 10 Hellfire points .”

Review by: Uzbekistan Progressive Rock Pages “Souls of Ambience: A 1000 Tears (2024) – mini-review-Australian band Souls of Ambience are out with the album “A 1000 Tears”, and progressive rock is the style explored on this production. This is a distinctly retro-oriented creation of the kind that looks back to the 1970s for the sound aesthetics as well as the variety of progressive rock that is explored, but also a band that mix up the retro charm just a little bit. We get a little bit of the drive and energy by progressive leaning hard rock bands such as Uriah Heep here, as well as some classic hard rock style guitar and keyboard combinations in energetic motions. We also get the more expressive keyboard details that were defining aspects among many of the progressive rock bands of yesteryear. A further element brought to the table are the more atmospheric tendencies bands like Pink Floyd explored in the second half of the 1970s, alongside some of the more romantic and folk-flavored tendencies of bands such as Jethro Tull. These details are combined in a compelling mix that should have a fairly wide appeal among progressive rock fans just as much as classic rock fans, at least as I experience this production. An album to seek out by those fond of the more accessible varieties of classic era progressive rock.”

Loud Enough Magazine – “Australia’s Souls of ambience release debut album A 1000 TEARS – 8 tracks of classic prog rock combining avant-garde, 80s rock, AOR melodic strength with a little touch of heavier rock.”

https://petesrocknewsandviews.com/ “A cross between Gothic, Progressive, Acid, and Psychedelic Rock with a bit of blues thrown in, stemming from a classical English background. Their debut album ‘A 1000 Tears’ has a haunting keyboard repertoire with a complimentary lead guitar backed by a strong bass rhythm.
The lyrics are surrealistic, moving, and beautifully poetic, covering a range from social commentary, through domestic violence topics to the beyond-life ethereal.
The music evokes the subconscious, and the lyrics transcend boundaries.
The concept album ‘a 1000 Tears’ intricately weaves the downward spiral story of a young woman who, driven by the need to shield her sibling from their abusive stepfather, finds herself on a harrowing path. Review of a live gig in Melbourne Australia by Peter Donald – “Hello, Everyone! Peabody here. SHERMAN!! Set the wayback machine for Melbourne, Australia, 1975. Singer, pianist, songwriter Greg Sneddon, releases a vinyl record, “Mind Stroll” on Mushroom Records/ While Australia was always more about “pub rock’ than prog rock. there has always been some musicians that would play and put out something adventurous!
Fast forward the TARDIS to 2024, and Sneddon has a nice combo called Souls of Ambience with guitarist, Marek Taboursky, bass player Kevin Kershaw and drummer Chris George, who has played with lon Drive in recent years, Sneddon plays keyboards and sings. This gig was mainly a play through of their independently released vinyl album, was delightfully clear in the sound mix on the night, and even though this combo has been around for a short time. All their songs are easy to relate to, in particular Greg’s take on domestic violence, ‘Had Enough Hurt” and ‘Mary in the Morning” and while lyrically they look at the painful side, the melodies and arrangement that are the sonic backdrop, take many styles from Ambient to Soul to Rock.Any who digs music from Tamam Shud,Sebastian Hardie to Aragon should check this band out. Some of their stuff channels a more positive mood, like the “Devil at 4pm” e.g. Gin o’clock!! Also, what impressed me was how Chris could play a completely different type of music, which required a drumming style for a softer’ quieter tempo, and blend into the mood of that music. l have no gauge on Marek and Kevin, but their playing was a substantial framework for the Souls of Ambience.”

“…….Listening to ‘A 1000 Tears’ as a concept album, the downward-spiral story of a young woman who “…knew she wouldn’t make it…” is a thread………”

“All songs are deeply personal and come from a perspective of lived experiences. ‘Souls of Ambience’ delves into the dark places where no person would truly choose to go…… hope lingers though and burns …… from the darkness comes forth that light……perseverance….the spirit to survive and overcome…… to find solace…..rescue…..purpose……meaning…….. we lose people sometimes, not all is a tale of happiness…… and parts of us also are lost on the journey…”
Sticky Notes…
“Melbourne band Souls Of Ambience have a distinctive sound, however no one track is the same as another. This album does not fit neatly into a specific genre but sits on the fringes of a few: Progressive rock, Acid Rock, Rock Ballads and even a Southern Boogie track. Kershaw, George, Taborsky bring their passion for ‘Metal’ music into the overall sound. Sneddon has been influenced by classical music in his song writing and this can be heard, in the undertones of the complex chord changes and stylish compositions. The synth is played with dynamics as Sneddon pounds the keys, as well as crafting soft nuances. Sneddon has been composing and writing since the early 70’s. This album picks up thematically where his first album ‘Mind Stroll’ (Mushroom Records) left off. The record is ‘progressive’, with it’s extended song formats – a collection of interconnected songs, varied and never the same.”
“Souls of ambience brings you back to the 70’s.
A cross between Gothic, progressive and Psychedelic Rock with a bit of blues thrown in (Devil at 4pm ) stemming from a classical English background. This album has a haunting keyboard repertoire with a complimentary lead guitar backed by a strong bass rhythm. The lyrics are surrealistic, moving and beautifully poetic. The music evokes the subconscious and the lyrics transcends boundaries.” (C&BP)
“…Featuring numbers ranging from edgy dance pieces through to extended deep-concept works, Souls of Ambience produce a big live sound. Nuanced-aggressive songs, poignant electro-balads…”
“…The tunes bring attitude yet there are moments of delicate softness, it’s a great combo. Definitely enjoyed the layered textures…”
Impressions / 8 songs
A THOUSAND TEARS
“…A very powerful song that sends a sad but needed message. Listening to this song will evoke many feelings and has the power to create unison, inspiration and change…” (MLP)
NEVER DROPS
“…Even in the midst of fear and emptiness, amongst feelings of loss and the unknown, this song evokes hope and strength…” (MLP)
SUMMER RAIN
“…Sung from a perspective of fear, hopelessness and despair, this song will make you cry whilst simultaneously keeping an upbeat and fast passed rhythm – the craftsmanship of this song is incredible…” (MLP)
CLARICE – DAUGHTER BEYOND THE SKY
“…Clarice is a song told from the perspective of a Mother’s daily inner emotion of loss and grief. In dreamy visions of transience.
A story that we all have been touched by in our own lives.
It’s a teary song, the interludes between each verse, with strong sweeping guitar lines and the melody create a beautiful internal space that follows in a gentle rhythm, softly the connection to those gone. The song seems to end too quickly for dreaming, and one feels – Play it again!…” (T.S.)
“…As a person who has lost someone, this song evoked many feelings of sadness, understanding, beauty, and empathy – A tear jerker, but a beautiful one…” (MLP)
GREY STREET
“…Grey Street is a sad song that allows the listener space to conjure up personal memories of their own history, whilst the telling of someone else’s story.
The Name of the song ‘Grey street’, may get its name from a place, a real street in the suburb of St Kilda Melbourne Australia, set on the seaside. Familiar to everyone from Melbourne. A few of the other lines such as: ‘The Leering Cars and all-night streetlight lies…’ ‘All the girls you’ve killed…’ ‘Palace wall…’ definitely suggest the actual place. The Palace was a historical building and famous venue in St Kilda that has since burnt down.
But maybe it’s just “Grey’ – the colour- You don’t need to know this actual place to relate to this song, with a strong melody, and timeless lyrics.
For those who don’t know Melbourne or those who are too young, this song is set in the era when St Kilda was a place for the underclass: Students, the poor, street people, working girls… with a strong artist community and immigrants who established European Cafes, cheap hardy foreign food – No English. You could go to the local hamburger shop, order your fish and chips along with heroin. In the 1940’s 50’s famous Australian painters lived and painted here, Such as Albert Tucker and Sydney Nolan.
Grey Street in this song is a place that no longer exists. It’s now a place for the Tourists and the well heeled. An Expensive and exclusive street with Palatial mansions and grand terraces.
At the end of Grey street is located the Crystal Ballroom at The George Hotel. It became known as a pivotal venue for Melbourne’s post-punk scene.
List of bands who played at the Crystal Ballroom:
Greg Sneddon, The Birthday Party, Dead Can Dance, Hunters & Collectors, Crime and the City Solution, The Models, The Moodists, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, The Saints, The Triffids, The Go-Betweens, The Boys Next Door, Venom P. Stinger, Paul Kelly and the Dots, Cosmic Psychos, among many others…” (T.S.)
“…A beautiful ballad that I cannot wait to play over and over again. There are many sad themes embedded in this song and when combined with the whole album, there is a sense of character progression and real story telling…) (MLP)
MARY OF THE MORNING
“…Mary of the morning continues to play in my head and I never want it to leave…” (MLP)
“This is a story from old Fitzroy Street. Of the many ghosts known and those long forgotten, always somewhere close, is the legend of Mary of the Morning…” (GS)
